The lens is very sharp and an excellent choice for the portrait shooter. There's a few things to consider though, Depth-of-Field (DOF) is so shallow that it's possible to have the subject's eye in focus while the nose and lips are slightly blurry. If you stop down a bit, say f/2.0, you'll keep more of the facial features acceptably sharp. Please also consider reading up on your camera's ability to micro adjust the focusing. It takes a little bit of time, but you'll be much happier if you do the adjustment and you shoot wide open.
It's a heavy lens and the AF is a bit slower so if you're planning to shoot indoor sports, consider pre-focusing rather than trying to have this lens track the subject. But it's still 1.8x faster than the original, so you might just have some luck here.
The AF system doesn't have any mechanical parts, so the focusing ring will spin freely until it's attached to the camera. This can provide a challenge to the video shooter as well when mounting on a non-EOS camera or using adaptors.
